There is no universal runtime number
How long a standby generator can operate depends on the exact model and configuration, electrical load, fuel supply at the required pressure/flow, environmental conditions, service requirements, and any instructions or limits in the current operator manual. A week-long outage cannot be translated into one runtime number for all natural-gas or propane systems.
A standby rating describes an output duty category, not by itself a universal annual hour cap or promised run duration. Read the exact model’s rating definition and maintenance schedule; do not interpret a general “standby” label as permission to ignore service, fuel supply, or site conditions.
One exact model’s manufacturer fuel-use data
Generac’s current G0073270 specification sheet lists the following consumption points for this specific model, at the manufacturer’s stated test loads:
| Fuel | 50% load | Full load | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural gas | 182 | 316 | ft³/hr |
| LP | 2.05 | 3.95 | gal/hr |
These are the manufacturer’s test figures for G0073270, not average real-world consumption, not a prediction for a different load or model, and not proof that a local service/tank can supply the generator continuously. Actual use and available output depend on fuel quality, pressure/flow, ambient conditions, elevation, equipment configuration, and load.
For a planning scenario, use the exact model’s published rate at a relevant load and your expected operating time, then discuss the assumptions with the installer and fuel provider. Do not treat this as a calculator or a fuel-bill estimate.
Fuel supply is not guaranteed by the fuel label
A natural-gas connection still depends on the utility service and the installed meter, regulator, and piping meeting the model’s requirements while other appliances may be operating. Utility service availability during a particular emergency is not something a product page can guarantee.
Propane runtime depends on the exact tank and usable fuel, temperature, supply rate, regulator/line design, actual load, and refill access. A tank’s nominal gallon label is not by itself an exact amount of fuel available to the generator. Ask the propane supplier and installer to verify the setup and expected consumption for the purchased model.
Use the exact maintenance schedule during extended operation
Do not apply a generic oil-change interval, dipstick frequency, or shutdown schedule to every generator. Cummins directs owners to the exact operator manual because maintenance differs by model. Check the installed unit’s current instructions before a storm and ask a qualified service provider what additional inspection is due for the expected run duration.
Never bypass a warning or protective shutdown. If the unit shows a fault, overheats, loses fuel, or behaves abnormally, follow the manual and contact qualified service. Do not open electrical or fuel-system components.
Questions to answer before an extended outage
- What exact model, fuel, output rating, and operator-manual revision are installed?
- What is the manufacturer’s fuel consumption at the planned load, and can the local supply sustain the required flow/pressure?
- What maintenance tasks or service call are due for the expected operating hours?
- Which loads can be delayed or turned off to stay within the system design?
- Who can provide fuel, service, or emergency support if roads or utility service are disrupted?
