Generac Whole House Generators: Models, Cost & Specs

Generac whole house generator guide: compare 22 kW and 26 kW models, natural gas versus propane output, published prices, ATS packages and specs.

The essential briefing

Key takeaways

  • Compare model numbers and fuel-specific standby ratings—not a brand’s headline kilowatt label alone.
  • A manufacturer-listed starting MSRP is not an installed project quote, and bundle contents can differ.
  • The data below is limited to two exact Generac models with current manufacturer product pages and spec sheets checked October 4, 2026.

BEFORE YOU REQUEST A QUOTE

Should you shortlist Generac?

Consider it when: Keep an exact Generac model on your shortlist when its verified natural-gas or LP output covers your professionally reviewed loads and an authorized local provider can commission and service the exact system.

Hold off when: Pause if an installer quotes only “22 kW” or “26 kW” without the actual model number, selected-fuel rating, ATS package and local warranty-service arrangement.

Conditional editorial interpretation of the cited manufacturer sources. Not a tested reliability ranking, individual-home sizing approval or claim of local dealer availability.

Generac whole house generator models covered

Generac whole house generators are sold in multiple residential sizes, configurations and transfer-switch bundles. Generac sells multiple standby-generator families and bundles. This page does not treat a brand-wide “typical” rating, warranty, noise level, or price as if it applied to every unit. It compares two exact residential model numbers—the 22 kW G0072600 and 26 kW G0073270—using the manufacturer product pages and their linked specification sheets.

These are manufacturer-published facts, not independent test results. Model availability, controls, included accessories, and terms can change; confirm the model and warranty documents in the quote you receive.

Verified model data

The output figures below are separate LP and natural-gas ratings. Fuel-use values are the manufacturer’s stated consumption at the listed load—not a prediction for a specific home. Sound figures are from the model-family sheet and carry its distance and measurement-direction caveats.

Generac’s specification sheet says sound is measured from the front at 23 feet; readings from other sides may be higher depending on installation. The 55 dB(A) value is a low-speed Quiet-Test exercise figure, not a normal-operation sound rating. The 22 kW model sheet gives the same stated normal-load and Quiet-Test figures for its model family.

Fuel ratings are not interchangeable

Both models are dual-fuel units, but the manufacturer lists different available output on natural gas and LP. If a comparison shows one rating without naming its fuel, it is incomplete. Verify the fuel the site will actually use and have the installing professional confirm that the supply, pressure, and piping meet the model’s installation requirements at load.

These page-level ratings are not a sizing recommendation. Capacity for a particular house depends on the actual running loads, motor-starting requirements, selected backed-up circuits, and any approved load-management configuration. Start with the load-based sizing guide, then have a qualified local professional assess the property.

Starting MSRP is not an installed price

The manufacturer product pages displayed the starting MSRPs shown above when checked on October 4, 2026. The pages do not establish a completed project price or prove that the same transfer switch, load management, fuel work, permits, site preparation, or labor are included. Generac’s separate installation guidance gives a broad $8,000–$16,000 planning range including the generator, system equipment and materials, and installation; Generac says actual prices vary by location and project complexity. Treat that as the manufacturer’s general planning estimate—not a quote or a guaranteed market average.

When comparing bids, request an itemized scope for the same generator model, switch rating and service-entry arrangement, load-management devices, gas capacity and pipe work, electrical runs, pad/site preparation, permits, startup, and warranty coverage. See the cost guide for how other published estimates differ in scope.

Questions to ask before choosing a model

  • Which exact model and fuel-specific output are in the quote?
  • Is the quoted package generator-only, or does it include a named transfer switch? What are its amperage and service-entrance rating?
  • What backed-up loads are supported simultaneously, and which loads will be shed or sequenced?
  • Has the professional confirmed the existing gas meter, regulator, line size, and pressure can serve all connected appliances at generator load?
  • Are electrical/fuel permits, inspections, trenching, pad, startup, and commissioning included?
  • Which warranty document applies to the exact serial/model and installation, and who handles service in this area?

Do not choose a larger rating based only on square footage or a brand’s product label. The exact load list and installation conditions are what a site assessment must resolve.

Manufacturer claims and limits of this comparison

Generac describes features such as electronic fuel control, remote monitoring, and its engine design in product materials. Those descriptions are the manufacturer’s claims; this publication has not tested those features, compared long-term reliability, or verified service response in an individual market.

There is no universal “best” brand. Dealer availability, a correctly engineered installation, exact bundle scope, service arrangements, and the homeowner’s backed-up loads may matter more than a single headline specification. We do not publish star ratings or declare a winner from unlike MSRP bundles.
