Find the authority before deciding the placement
Ask which authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) controls electrical, fuel-gas, building and fire approvals at your address. State rules, adopted code editions, local amendments, equipment listing, utility requirements and HOA restrictions can all affect the proposal. An installer should identify the relevant authorities and show how the selected model’s installation instructions fit the site.
Do not turn one manufacturer’s enclosure clearance into a universal property-line, window or opening setback. Read our placement guide and ask for a site plan showing openings, exhaust direction, property boundaries, utility equipment, flood exposure and access for service.
Verified official starting point: Fairfax County, Virginia
Code / regulatory requirement Fairfax County’s residential electrical permit page includes new electrical equipment in its permit scope. It also identifies exceptions and separate town approval considerations. Use it to begin the local inquiry; it does not establish every requirement for a generator at a particular address. Multifamily or commercial work may follow a different process.

Questions for the AHJ, utility and installer
- Which electrical, gas, mechanical, building or fire permits apply?
- Which code editions and local amendments govern this address?
- Who submits the site plan and schedules inspections?
- Does the utility require a meter, regulator, service or connection change?
- What noise, zoning, floodplain or HOA restrictions apply?
- What must pass inspection before startup or final payment?
Why this is not a 50-state rule directory
We have not verified enough primary-source local requirements to publish a nationwide permit table. Our location records distinguish the source’s jurisdiction, topic, date and limits. Additional metros will be added only when their official sources can be checked.
